Book Review: Unlimited Squirrels in “Guess What!?” by Mo Willems

Guess what? Mo Willems is back with the 4th book in the Unlimited Squirrels series titled Guess What!? Now available from Disney’s Hyperion label, the new book features easy-to-read speech bubbles to tell a story about anticipation.

Zoom Squirrel is going to the beach at the end of the week and he can’t stop talking about it! He tells all of his friends, but when someone asks what Zoom Squirrel will do once he gets there, the story takes a hilarious turn. Full of new experiences, Zoom Squirrel discovers a new way of looking at things.

The main story takes up about two-thirds of the book, using Willems’s signature character styles in a mixed-media format. The sandy beaches, for example, are a photograph paired with flat two-dimensional characters and water. It’s a fun twist and one that is new to me in his work. Another page with the nighttime sky adds childlike whimsy in the form of photographed silver star stickers.

The rest of the book includes short-form bonus content including three “Acorn-y” jokes, a guessing game, and an explanation of two big words that fit into the story (“Anticipation” and “Disappointment”). The “Emote-Acorns” are back as well, helping kids understand the emotions of Zoom Squirrel in certain moments of the story.

If your kids are already big fans of Mo Willems, then the latest Limited Squirrels release is guaranteed to please. There’s no need to start with a particular book, either, so whether this is a child’s first time meeting Zoom Squirrel and his many, many friends or they’re already old friends, there’s lots of fun to be had in Guess What!?
