New “Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber” Manga Announced, Will Take Place Between Episodes VIII and IX

The sequel trilogy era is expanding this year with new stories from Lucasfilm Publishing.

A new manga has been announced by Lucasfilm Publishing and Viz Media, entitled Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber. This story will be set in the sequel trilogy era of the larger saga, between Episode VIII (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and Episode IX (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker).

What’s happening:

  • Via an exclusive news post on ScreenRant today, Lucasfilm Publishing announced a new manga entitled Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber, set during the sequel trilogy era between Episodes VIII and IX.
  • This title will be written and illustrated by Kenny Ruiz (Team Phoenix) and published sometime this year by Viz Media. According to ScreenRant, we will be getting more information about Path of the Lightsaber at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Japan.
  • I want to point out that the above-linked ScreenRant article contains several factual errors, including implying that The High Republic comics are still published by IDW (they are currently housed at Marvel and Dark Horse) and calling the villainous Nihil “creatures” instead of marauders from a variety of sentient species. The writer also shifts between different pronouns when referring to Nioka, the main character of this new manga, as evidenced in the quote below. It’s consequently unclear which is correct.

What they’re saying:

  • ScreenRant: “In this new manga, fans will follow a young tinkerer named Nioka who dreams of becoming a Jedi like Luke Skywalker. Their life is upturned after they stumble upon an actual lightsaber while investigating the ruins of a High Republic-era ship. Of course, there are others who are after the ancient Jedi weapon, complicating her ability to learn how to properly wield the artifact as she tries to protect it and herself.”

Star Wars: Path of the Lightsaber will be released sometime later this year by Viz Media.
