Disney Halts Active Development on “Gigantic”

At the 2015 D23 Expo, Walt Disney Animation Studios announced a new take on the classic Jack and the Beanstalk tale called Gigantic. The film was to feature songs by Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez — with the duo even performing a tentative song at the event — and be directed by Nathan Greno and Meg LeFauve (who joined the project in 2016). Since then, the film has been pushed back, most recently exiting its 2018 slot for November 2020. Now, as THR reports, Disney has decided to shelve the project and end active development.

Ed Catmull, president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, made the announcement, saying, “It’s impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn’t working. With Gigantic, we’ve come to that point, and although it’s a difficult decision, we are ending active development for now.” Catmull went on to say that the studio is developing a new project, which will take Gigantic‘s current November 2020 release date, saying details about said film would emerge soon.
