Team –

Today it’s my pleasure to announce some very happy news: Derricke Dennis is being promoted to staff correspondent at ABC Audio, making his role on our award-winning roster a more permanent one.

Derricke first stepped into our newsroom in the fall of 2019, full of enthusiasm and with an offer we couldn’t refuse: “I’d like to work overnight shifts, if you have any.” It didn’t take long for Derricke to become a fixture on ABC News Radio, working a full schedule for the last two years as a freelancer, and anchoring our flagship I-NET newscast with a distinctive style – simultaneously deep but laid-back, thorough yet conversational.

He brings a wealth of journalism experience to his new role. Before ABC, Derricke anchored a weeknight global newscast on I-24 News. He also has been a host on the Law & Crime network, and before that he worked as a reporter and anchor at WCBS-TV, News 12 New Jersey, and WDIV-TV in Detroit. He’s a skilled storyteller who’s been instrumental in our coverage of the pandemic, delivering many breaking headlines and – just as deftly – documenting in a long-form piece how weird it was to return to a New Jersey gym for the first time post-lockdown.

Derricke is an NJ native who grew up in Atlantic City. He graduated from Howard University’s John H. Johnson School of Communications in Washington, DC.

In this new role, Derricke will report for all ABC Audio platforms, he’ll continue to anchor newscasts – as well as coverage of breaking news and special events – and he’ll be instrumental in our efforts to build new products and reach new audiences.

Please join me in congratulating Derricke. We’re excited to hear what he does next.

Scott
