Knott's Berry Farm Could Open Long-Awaited Re-Themed Coaster This Summer or Earlier

We've heard the park cry wolf before.

Knott's Berry Farm seems to be getting ready to debut their long-awaited reimagined iteration of their classic coaster, Montezooma's Revenge.

What's Happening:

  • Knott's Berry Farm guests will soon be able to strap into the long-awaited makeover of their historic coaster, Montezooma's Revenge.
  • The coaster has been all but abandoned for four years, with a return date that has constantly been pushed back.
  • Now, the reimagined coaster - Montezooma: The Forbidden Fortress - is set to launch by this summer or maybe even earlier, according to a new report from the OC Register.
  • They report that Knott's officials have shared that they are "getting close to unveiling an opening date and welcoming all who are brave enough to embark on an unforgettable expedition in search of Montezuma's elusive gold."
  • All the parts that are needed for the new adventure and makeover of the classic attraction are reportedly on site at Knott's Berry Farm, including the track, the motors, and the coaster trains.
  • Reportedly, Knott’s plans to start testing in the next month or two once the new trains are placed on the track.
  • Recently, a new electromagnetic Linear Synchronous Motor launch system reportedly arrived on site, which will assist with the launch and braking of the new coaster trains.
  • The coaster originally debuted back in 1978 at the park - a Schwarzkopf flywheel-launched shuttle loop coaster that had even been designated as a historic landmark as the last operating ride of its kind in the U.S., and the longest to remain standing in its original location.
  • The ride closed in 2022, when the the reimagined version of the attraction was announced to open in 2023. Since 2022 though, the coaster had sat partially disassembled for years.
  • The new attraction is set to include randomized launch sequences using the newer technology, and was slated to be part of the reimagining of the park's Fiesta Village - though that debuted in May of 2023 while Montezooma: The Forbidden Fortress remained shuttered.
  • Back in 2024, we got an update that the coaster would reopen sometime in 2025. That came and went.

The New Stuff:

  • The return of the historic attraction also comes with the debut of a brand new backstory.
  • The legend surrounding the whereabouts of Montezuma’s gold has beguiled treasure hunters far and wide. Many have dredged Mexican rivers, even plunged into the Pacific in search of the riches. But alas, a handful of the clever scavengers have found themselves in the true resting place of the infamous gold - just outside a small village in California, Fiesta Village. The time has come to see if new adventurers can succeed in extracting the gold and break the curse that has fallen upon many who have tried and failed. But, beware the way forward might not always be as expected.
  • You can already see how this alludes to one of the biggest surprise elements of the newly enhanced attraction - not knowing if the coaster will launch backwards or forwards as they depart.
  • The new coaster trains are set to look like a mythical creature made from rocks with fang-like teeth, reptilian scales, spiked armor, and glowing red eyes.
  • Leading up to the new station is a new queue experience that will take riders through the exploration camp of Montezuma's hidden Aztec fortress.
