Tonight “Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You” a special hour-long presentation of the popular animated series will air on the Disney Channel at 8P / 7PC. If you’ve not yet given this quirky cartoon a chance tonight’s special is a great opportunity to sample the fun. As a fan of the series, it showcases the various show elements that have made it a must see in our home — musical numbers, humor, heart, wacky adventures, unrequited love, guest stars and a platypus. Based on numerous news reports the Disney Company is beginning to get its full weight behind this series, you may have already noticed the dramatic increase of Phineas and Ferb merchandise available at the Disney Store, the increase in media appearances such as their recent Dodger Stadium appearance and they even got legendary Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton to perform the “Agent P” theme song. Don’t know who “Agent P” is, well I’ve crafted a brief introduction to the series and its characters in hopes that maybe a few Disney fans who may not be in the series target demographic will give the series a try. I hope you enjoy as much as we do.

Set in the town of Danville, Phineas and Ferb follows the wild adventures of two inventive brothers during their days of summer vacation. Moments into each episode, circumstances inspire the day’s invention and subsequent adventure. Phineas (the triangular headed and far more talkative of the duo) typically declares “I know what we’re going to do today” before sharing the idea with his brother Ferb (a mostly silent bulbous nosed boy).

Phineas and Ferb have a pet platypus, Perry. While in their presence he “doesn’t do much” , he is actually Secret Agent P. In each episode Agent P battles the incompetent villain Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Their B-plot spy-v-spy battle is woven through the sequences of Phineas and Ferb’s day of fun with their neighborhood friends — Isabella, the Fireside Girl (who has a crush on Phineas), the Indian-American neigbor, Baljeet who is very smart and obsessed with performing well academically, along with his unexpected pal Buford, a big for his age tough kid whose actually a bit of softy.

While this gang participates in any number of fantastic adventures each day such as building an extreme roller coaster that encompasses much of the city, creating a seemingly ocean-sized beach in the backyard or experiencing the meteorite rise and fall as a one-hit wonder band, their teen sister Candance tries unsuccessfully to get her parents, mostly mom to catch them in the act. Sometimes she is distracted by Jeremy the neighborhood boy she likes but most of the timethe evidence Candace so desperately seeks is destroyed or removed inthe resolution of Agent P and Doofenshmirtz’s battle. Phineas and Ferb appear as typical boys to their parents. And Perry reappears alongside them as their “doesn’t do much” platypus. But tomorrow will bring another day and Phineas’ declaration “I know what we’re going to do today”
