App Review: Kingdom Hearts Unchained X Delights New and Old Fans Alike

Long ago people lived in peace, bathed in the warmth of light. Everyone loved the light! Then the people began to fight over it and they wanted to keep it for themselves. Darkness was born in their hearts, but small fragments of light survived in the hearts of the children. With these fragments of light, children rebuilt the lost world.

The wait is finally over for Kingdom Hearts fans with the release of Kingdom Hearts Unchained X. This game gives the user the ability to create an avatar in their own likeness. In traveling through the Kingdom Hearts lands, you have the chance to collect medals and LUX — a type of light — and obtain help from classic Disney characters as they assist you in defeating the darkness and fighting the monsters known as the Heartless.

I am familiar with Kingdom Hearts, but this is my first personal experience playing a Kingdom Hearts game. This made me nervous that I would be missing out on key story elements and I would be at a huge disadvantage. However, I was pleasantly surprised that while the game is loading, they have an entire intro that explains everything you need to know! After finding out that darkness has taken over and it’s up to you to help find the light in the world, the game becomes more simple. I have to admit, I’m not great with first person avatar type games, but was happy to find that there are many directions and helps throughout the game. If you get lost, the help section is a great tool.

This is a very fast moving game with an extensive story! I loved that when you level up, you move through familiar stories such as Snow White, and you also earn additional costume pieces that feature characters from films as recent as Zootopia. I’m not usually a fan of games or apps that have more complex story lines, but I found myself compelled to come back again and again. It was also easy to take a break and then come back to and jump right back into where you were at, which I really appreciate.

Lauren has been a Disney fan all her life. On her first birthday, she received a copy of the Disney Sing-a-long, Disneyland Fun, and ever since that, she's been hardcore in learning everything she can about the park. Another one of her favorite aspects is the food and she enjoys recreating those recipes to share with her friends and family. She also loves any craft that she can add a little bit of Disney magic or a hidden Mickey to make more magical.
