Children’s Book Review: Vampirina at the Beach

Disney Junior recently announced that they are adapting a new series based on the Vampirina book series. In anticipation of the show’s launch later this year, author Ann Marie Pace has returned to the character for a third story. For the unfamiliar, Vampirina debuted in 2012 with Vampirina Ballerina and she returned a year later in Vampirina Ballerina Hosts a Sleepover. New this year is Vampirina at the Beach.

On a beautiful summer’s night, Vampirina and all of her monster friends and family take a trip to the beach. She loves all of the fun activities the ocean offers, including swimming, surfing, volleyball and sandcastle making. And her ballet skills even help her with many of these activities.

Throughout the story, author Anne Marie Page offers kids many safety tips for beach fun, including making sure the lifeguard can see you (he looks like the Creature from the Black Lagoon) and wearing sunblock (vampires even wear it on nighttime beach trips). The illustrations by LeUyen Pham are so charming and delightful and instantly make a family of monsters look charming and appealing.

Vampirina at the Beach was my first exposure to this character, but it makes me curious to check out the upcoming Disney Junior series. This book offers a cute story about a peculiar family trip to the beach and Vampirina’s world is a lot of fun. If your little ones love kid-friendly Halloween stories, then they will love reading Vampirina books all year round.
