Just a little over two weeks from the beginning of Astro Oriber’s refurbishment, the large crane that took up a large chunk of walkway in Tomorrowland has been removed.
What’s Happening:
- Progress on the refurbishment of Astro Orbiter continues to move quickly at Magic Kingdom.
- Officially beginning on January 15th, construction crews quickly arrived to disassemble the attraction and much of its theming as it aims to reopen sometime this summer.
- About 5 days ago, the entire ride system for the attraction had been completely removed, leaving only the planetarium themed ring that hugs the attraction.
- As the refurbishment continues, the giant crane that took up a huge chunk of walkway in the center of Tomorrowland has been removed, indicating that much of the major refurbishment work will happen outside of the park.
- Not much was shared in regards to this refurbishment, but it is clear that the large theming elements that were added to the attraction for the 1990s Tomorrowland overhaul will be staying in some capacity.
- The planets have been removed and we anticipate some painting work to happen around the attraction to at least freshen up the current color scheme. It will be interesting to see if they try to tie in these large sci-fi-esque elements into the retro futurism aesthetic that Tomorrowland has slowly been leaning back into.
- From the entrance of Tomorrowland, the elevated platform looks a tad barren without the iconic flat ride sitting on top.
- As of right now, the attractions entrance sign and safety signs have been untouched, but, with most of them looking warn, we anticipate them being repainted or replaced.
