“Beauty and the Beast” Remake Will Reportedly Feature a Gay Character

Over the past several weeks and even months, Disney has been teasing fans with images, trailers, and clips from their upcoming Beauty and the Beast live-action film. Now U.K.-based magazine Attitude has broken some more big news about the movie: it will feature a gay character. This revelation comes from an interview with director Bill Condon featured in their April issue (which finds stars Emma Watson and Dan Stevens on the cover) where he talks a bit about the character and one particular scene in particular.

The character is question is none other than LeFou, played in this version by Josh Gad. Condon told Attitude, “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston.” The director added, “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. And that’s what has its payoff at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast hits theatres March 17th.
