The Lion King Holds Japan Premiere

The international rollout of Jon Favreau’s The Lion King continued with the recent Japanese premiere which was held at Tokyo’s brand-new Tatemono Brillia Hall. The venue features the Grand Cinema Sunshine which is the largest IMAX theatre in Japan.

  • Yosuke Eguchi (Japanese voice of Scar)
  • Japanese singer Riri, whose cover of “Circle of Life” will be included in Japan’s official soundtrack for the film

This new take on The Lion King has found great success already since its opening weekend.

  • The film opened with a domestic debut of $191.8 million
  • Globally, the film opened to $446.1 million, the ninth highest global debut of all-time
  • The film is already the number 7 film of the year globally
  • The Lion King’s domestic debut is the number 8 opening of all-time
  • It is a record debut for the month of July
  • It is also a record for a PG-rated film
  • It is the biggest opening for a Disney film outside of Marvel and Lucasfilm having performed better than Incredibles 2 and Beauty and the Beast
