As Earth Month continues, the Disney Parks Blog takes us over to Hong Kong Disneyland for a look at one of their environmental efforts in the latest episode of Field Notes, focusing on wood chipping efforts at the park.

What’s Happening:

  • Earlier this week, we learned how Tokyo Disney Sea passenger vehicles are powered with clean energy for a responsible ride around American Waterfront.
  • Today, we’re checking out how Hong Kong Disneyland horticulturists are converting green waste to wood chips in an effort to efficiently improve soil health.
  • Wood chips serve as a conditioner for the soil, retaining soil temperature and moisture, while also helping to regulate weed and bacteria growth. The wood chipper program at Hong Kong Disneyland allows the greenery to grow while keeping the waste at a low.
  • In the video below, we get to join Louis, Associate Horticulture Service Manager, to learn how wood chipping gives a second life to nearly 340 tons of decaying wood and fallen leaves at the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort each year.

  • 340 tons of wood are chipped each year to help with the environmental goals that don’t stop at woodchipping. Disney has numerous environmental goals to achieve, including:
    • achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions for direct operations;
    • purchasing or producing 100% zero carbon electricity for all direct operations;
    • collaborating with industry groups and investing in low carbon fuel innovation;
    • investing in natural climate solutions;
    • implementing site-specific watershed stewardship strategies at high-impact sites;
    • serving 100% environmentally responsible seafood at U.S. parks and resorts;
    • working to achieve zero waste to landfill for Disney’s wholly owned and operated parks and resorts;
    • new construction projects to be designed to near net zero, minimize water consumption and support zero waste operations;
    • ensure all paper, wood and palm oil used in Disney-branded packaging and products is from certified sustainable sources;
    • ensure all branded product textiles contain recycled or certified sustainably sourced content, or are made from lower impact alternatives; and
    • reduce the Company’s plastics footprint across all businesses.
