“Mrs. Doubtfire” To Return To Broadway in October

A musical based on the 1993 classic, Mrs. Doubtfire has been adapted into a musical that is returning to Broadway on October 21st, according to Deadline.

What’s Happening:

  • Mrs. Doubtfire, a theatrical adaptation of the 1993 film starring Robin Williams, is among a number of titles that have been announced to be returning to Broadway this fall.
  • The musical reportedly played only three preview performances last spring before theaters were closed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Preview performances are set to begin on October 21st, with an official opening night on December 5th at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
  • Though at the Stephen Sondheim Theater, which traditionally holds performances by the Roundabout Theatre Company, Mrs. Doubtfire is presented by a special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical, and is not a Roundabout production.
  • The musical’s book was written by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, who previously worked on an adaptation of Something Rotten!. Directed by Jerry Zaks, the musical also stars Rob McClure (Beetlejuice, Chaplin) in the title role, and follows the same story of an out-of-work actor and divorced dad who creates the alter ego of the titular Scottish nanny who is attempting to stay close to his kids.
  • Along with Mrs. Doubtfire, other shows that are returning include The Lion King, and Aladdin.

What They’re Saying:

  • Producer Kevin McCollum: “I’m thrilled that the Mrs. Doubtfire company will reunite on Broadway this fall bringing their indomitable spirit and talent to this new production based on one of the most beloved films of all time.”
