Video Recap: Oogie Boogie Bash Debuts Full of Frightful Fun at Disney California Adventure

It’s Halloween Time again at Disneyland Resort, and this year instead of the hard-ticketed after-hours Mickey’s Halloween Party event in Disneyland itself, the Happiest Place On Earth is hosting the new Oogie Boogie Bash (starring that vile villain from The Nightmare Before Christmas) in its sister theme park, Disney California Adventure.

Last night Oogie Boogie Bash made its debut for guests at DCA, and with it came scads of supernatural shows and surprises, such as the all-new “World of Color: Villainous” nighttime water and light spectacular on Paradise Bay.

Inside the Disney Theater in Hollywood Land (ordinarily home to “Disney Junior Dance Party”) families gathered to enjoy “Mickey’s Trick & Treat,” which saw Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy getting down with a new mad scientist friend for some not-so-scary storytelling and side-stepping.

Next, crowds gathered along the Disney California Adventure parade route in anticipation of the “Frightfully Fun Parade,” and while they waited they were entertained by some very impressive projection-mapping Halloween-style shows on the front of the park’s Carthay Circle Restaurant.

Then the “Frightfully Fun Parade” finally made its way through the park, but not before the menacing Headless Horseman pursued the hapless Ichabod Crane down the path. We also got our first glimpse of the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland in his first stateside appearance at the tail end of the parade.

Another very unique attraction offered only during Oogie Boogie Bash this year is the Villains Grove walk-through experience in the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail. For this must-see limited-time adventure, Imagineers have transformed this area of the part into a Halloween wonderland full of eerie light effects and mysterious sounds, all themed to a variety of villains from throughout Disney history. It’s difficult to do it justice via description, but Villains Grove is undeniably a major highlight of the event.

Of course, what would a Disneyland Resort Halloween party be without character meet-and-greets? Plenty of our favorite friends were scattered at different locations throughout the park, but none were as popular (both in person and via social media response) than Donald Duck and Goofy in their Kingdom Hearts outfits.

Some rare villain characters such as the Big Bad Wolf (Three Little Pigs), Prince John and the Sheriff of Nottingham (Robin Hood), Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Shan Yu (Mulan), and Governor Ratcliffe (Pocahontas) posed for photos with guests near Grizzly River Run.

Other Disney villains like the Evil Queen and Maleficent made appearances in their own immersive Trick-or-Treating trails.

And who can forget Mickey and Minnie in their cool Oogie Boogie Bash outfits?

Plus, additional projection effects like these ominous black clouds rolling in over Hollywood Land really added to the overall atmosphere of the event.

All told, Oogie Boogie Bash is jam-packed with new activities, chilling shows, meetable characters, and of course the usual fantastic attractions found around Disney California Adventure. Unfortunately, it’s entirely sold out for the rest of this Halloween season. So hopefully you’ve either already got a ticket or are prepared to cross your fingers that it comes back again next year!
