Summer Movie Preview: “Free Guy”

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be trapped inside a video game? No, I’m not talking about Tron or even Wreck-It Ralph. I’m talking about 20th Century Studios’ long-awaited action-comedy Free Guy, which stars Ryan Reynolds as a man who finds out his entire life is taking place inside a video game.

“In Twentieth Century Studio’s epic adventure-comedy Free Guy, a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.”

Ryan Reynolds is certainly no stranger to action and comedy. In fact, the Deadpool star has actually found a bit of a niche with it. This makes him the perfect choice to star in a film like this, where he can flex his funny bone while still running away from explosions. He is also joined by a hilarious cast that should make this movie a ton of fun.

The Cast:

  • Ryan Reynolds
  • Jodie Comer
  • Joe Keery
  • Lil Rel Howery
  • Utkarsh Ambudkar
  • Taika Waititi

Free Guy was not immune to the delays that affected so many films over the past year and a half. The film was originally set to debut on July 3, 2020 (as you can see in the poster above). It was then delayed to December 11, 2020, an ambitious move that proved to be fruitless. Finally, it was moved to its current release date of August 13, 2021. It’s been quite the wait for this film, given that the original trailer debuted all the way back in December 2019.

The team behind this film includes director Shawn Levy, whose credits include films like Night at the Museum and Cheaper by the Dozen, as well as the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Reynolds also serves as a producer on the film.
