National Geographic's Epic "Lion" Series From Jon Favreau Drops Trailer Ahead of Release
The story of a real life Lion King.
Jon Favreau brought the world Disney's The Lion King in a way that it almost looked real, but for the last four years he's been working on the story of a real lion king. Lion is an upcoming limited series from National Geographic that Favreau is executive producing, and now we have our first look at the lion who could be king.
What's Happening:
- National Geographic has released the new trailer for Lion, an upcoming four part event series that follows a young lion cub, Kio, as it grows up.
- The series was filmed over four years in Maasai Mara, Kenya. It's touted as the first to document a lion's complete journey to adulthood. It took nearly 1400 filming days to complete, the most time any film crew has spent with a single pride.
- Lion is executive produced by Jon Favreau and Mike Gunton, creative director of BBC Studios Natural History Unit.
- O.J. Lynch, who has played Mufasa in The Lion King on stage will narrate the series.
- While the series is a wildlife documentary, there is still a story being told, echoing that of Disney's Lion King as it follows Kio from cub to leader of his pride.

- Lion will debut on National Geographic on August 19 at 9/8 central. All episodes will be streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on August 20.
