What’s Happening:

  • ABC News’ next edition of the primetime series Superstar will present a profile of legendary comedian Richard Pryor.
  • Tapping into material from the ABC News archives, Superstar: Richard Pryor will highlight his groundbreaking work in comedy as well as diving into his upbringing in a brothel, how he made his way into the world of show business, and how how broke barriers with his comedy that depicted the realities of Black America.
  • Additionally the special will explore Pryor’s issues with drugs, a near-death experience, his multiple sclerosis diagnosis, and his lasting legacy following his death.
  • Superstar: Richard Pryor is told through interviews with family, friends and those closest to him along with archival footage of Pryor’s interview with Barbara Walters.
  • The special episode will air Wednesday, September 1st (10:00-11:00 pm EDT), on ABC and can also be viewed the next day on demand and on Hulu.
