Shape-Shifting Adventures Await: Ryan Coogler Producing "Animorphs" Series Reboot for Disney+
The iconic book series from the 90s is coming back for a new series at Disney+
Ryan Coogler is bringing another nostalgic 1990s franchise back to Disney+ with a new adaptation of children’s fantasy book series Animorphs.
What's Happening:
- TheWrap reports that Coogler’s Proximity Media is set to produce a television adaptation of children’s fantasy book series Animorphs for Disney+.
- Animorphs will follow a group of high schoolers, who uncover a hidden threat lurking in their everyday lives, as they juggle their relationships, curfews and a superpower that binds them.
- The series will be written and executive produced by Bayan Wolcott, who has worked on projects such as Hulu's upcoming The Testaments and The Summer I Turned Pretty.
- Coogler along with his wife Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian will executive produce the reboot for Proximity Media. Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman will executive produce for Scholastic.
- This will mark the second adaptation of K. A. Applegate’s 54-book youth sci-fi series, following a Nickelodeon series that ran for two seasons from 1998 to 2000.
- The book series follows five teenagers Jake, Marco, Cassie, Rachel, and Tobias, who discover that the Earth is secretly being taken over by a parasitic alien, Yeerkks. They meet a dying Andalite alien, who gives them the ability to morph into any animal they touch by absorbing the animal’s DNA. They use this power to fend off Yeerks and save the world.
- This marks the second 1990s franchise that Coogler is rebooting for a Disney streaming service, following his much-hyped reboot pilot for The X-Files at Hulu.
- Animorphs hails from the same era as R.L. Stine's Goosebumps, another book series that was recently adapted by Disney+ – and was sadly canceled after only two seasons.
