The actor will write and produce a remake of the 1950 western film starring Gregory Peck.

20th Century Studios is developing a retelling of the 1950 Gregory Peck film The Gunfighter with Ethan Hawke.

What’s Happening:

  • Deadline reports that Ethan Hawke will write a reimagining of the 1950 western The Gunfighter for 20th Century Studios, alongside his writing partner Shelby Gaines.
  • The hope is for Hawke to direct the film, but currently he only has a deal to write and produce the film, which is in early development.
  • The original film follows the notorious gunfighter Jimmy Ringo (Peck), who rides into town to find his true love, who doesn’t want to see him. He hasn’t come looking for trouble, but trouble finds him around every corner.
  • Hawke has previously noted that The Gunfighter is one of his favorite films of all time, talking to Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz about discovering the film as an adult after listening to the Bob Dylan song “Brownsville Girl,” which mentions the film multiple times.

  • Hawke recently wrote, directed and produced Wildcat starring his daughter, Maya Hawke, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.
